課程概述

Course aim:
This training course offers plenty of chances to practice public speaking in front of your peers. Our goal is to be able to present simple ideas in a coherent fashion and articulate your points on a number of contemporary and practical issues beyond casual conversation topics. In other words, I want you to be able to translate what goes on in your mind as an adult into audible sounds in idiomatic English. You are expected to make general but informed comments and use a slightly more sophisticated language when you speak. To that effect, you will need to enlarge the size of your vocabulary via close reading of contemporary English articles and learn to speak slowly, clearly, precisely, and in full sentences. Some sessions will be taught by native English speakers.

Format: Class meets 3 hours per week, broken down into:
2-hr Monday session: theme and article based talking/discussion session
1-hr Thursday session: reading or other activities with conversation exercises

課程目標
Initial lectures will cover such topics as accent and pronunciation, style, learning tools and online resources, etc. I will email you or post on CEIBA a dozen modern articles for this semester. Each article will be “adopted” by a group of up to 3 student speakers. In principle we will focus on 1 article or topic per week. Speakers assigned to the weekly article/topic will take turns presenting the contents of it to the audience who will then give feedback and ask the speakers questions. This is what I meant by “plenty of chances to practice speaking.” Each student is expected to participate in such groups at least 4 times during the semester. Those who are not speakers-of-the-week will also have to read the articles or research the topics ahead of time and give informed feedback in subsequent conversation sessions.

A note to those to whom usually mum is the word: our goal is purely educational. I am not here to judge you but to encourage you to speak and speak clearly and confidently. Each session will end with a comment on your performance. When I correct you in class, and when your peers offer their comments, the purpose is solely to help you become a better speaker, not to shame you. As a non-native speaker, I myself stand to be corrected from time to time.
課程要求
Requirements:
Punctual attendance is mandatory. I am very strict on this one. If you have more than 3 unexcused absences, you will fail the course, period. Provided that you own a solid attendance record, and that you are willing to speak in class, your final grade will be calculated based on the following scheme: Regular speaking tasks: 20%, Prepared speeches: 20%, Other exercises: 20%, Final presentation: 30%, Bonus for good behavior (very subjective): 10%.

Final presentation: each of you will deliver a 3-minute speech on a pre-arranged topic in front of peer reviewers.

Exams: None.

Restrictions: no electronic device is allowed in class. Unless I ask you to access a piece of information on your smartphone or on your tablet or notebook computer, you will not use such gadgets in class. LINE, FB, and other such social media are prohibited in class.
